IDEA-GLAMA RESEARCH & INFORMATION NETWORK

Coordinator: Clifton L. Holland, IDEA Ministries

(Update of original report from October 1997)

The following institutions and persons are part of a growing network of organizations and individuals that are working together to maintain and update our current database of information on ethnic and religious diversity in the Greater Los Angeles Metro Area (GLAMA = Los Angeles & Orange counties); the Inland Empire (Riverside & San Bernardino counties); and Ventura County (urban spill-over from Los Angeles County). We hope to have at least one organization in each region that will accept the primary responsibility for on-going fieldwork and database management within their region. They will be the primary providers of new information about their region to other members of the network.

IDEA Ministries will continue to facilitate the interchange of information between these organizations and individuals, and will coordinate training activities in the use of IDEA Church Directory Software (ICDS), the Atlas GIS (Geodemographic Information Systems) software, and other software programs that are essential to maintaining the network. Global updates on the database will be provided to participants in the network by IDEA Ministries or our agents at least twice each year. However, we hope to provide a continuous flow of information between participants by means of a GLAMA-NET world-wide web page on the Internet where users can upload and download information at any time using a password. This will ensure all users of immediate access to new information about specific ethnic and religious groups that members of the partnership have uploaded to the web page/FTP site.

Currently, our database of religious groups includes over 12,400 listings (Los Angeles 5-county region), which are linked by classification codes to The Encyclopedia of American Religions (5th Edition, Dr. J. Gordon Melton, editor; Detroit, Michigan: Gale Research, 1996). Dr. Melton, Director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion (ISAR) in Santa Barbara, serves as an advisor for this project. We have reason to believe that our database on ethnic and religious diversity is the largest such database for any city in the world. See our order form or web site for a list of products that are available related to this database.
